People Don’t Come With Instructions. Maybe We Should Learn to Read Them Anyway.

LinkedIn.com, August 2026-I Wish People Came With Instructions

One of my clients shared an operating manual about how to work with him most effectively when we first started working together. It was the first time I’ve ever experienced that and it was brilliant. The details were spot on as I’ve reviewed and reflected on the document over time; it’s actually been extremely helpful.

Wouldn’t life be easier if more people came with instructions?

Not a résumé. Not a LinkedIn profile. Not a Myers-Briggs type, an Enneagram number, or a list of strengths generated during an executive offsite.

I mean actual instructions that are unique to them.

Here’s what makes me feel valued. Here’s what shuts me down. Here’s how I make decisions. Here’s what I need when I’m overwhelmed. Here’s how I behave when I’m scared. Here’s the best way to challenge me. Here’s what silence means when it comes from me. And here’s the thing I probably won’t tell you unless you ask.

The AI Conversation We’re Not Having Yet: Leadership in an Era of Perpetual Adaptation

LinkedIn.com, August 2026-I’ve spent my career at the intersection of technology, innovation, and human potential, leading and observing one wave of disruption after another reshape how we work and live.

The personal computer changed the nature of office work. The internet transformed communication and commerce on a global scale. Mobile technology untethered us from our desks and gave us freedom to roam. Cloud computing rewrote the economics of software. Each innovation has brought uncertainty, excitement, skepticism, and no shortage of disruption.

Yet there was always a rhythm to these transitions.

Organizations experimented. Employees learned. New practices emerged. Eventually, what once felt revolutionary became familiar. People developed confidence. Businesses established a new cadence. We settled into a new normal. The technology matured, and so did our relationship with it.

Artificial intelligence feels fundamentally different.

Confessions of a Lifelong Learner

I was just thinking back on how I spent summers when I was growing up. Yes, there were family trips and as I got older I had summer jobs. But one thing that remained consistent from a very young age was my passion for reading books — I was (and still am) a voracious reader. I still read on average two to three books per month. True confession: I’m a lifelong seeker and learner. I don’t think that will ever change. Periodically I get grief from my close friends about not reading fiction, but there’s so much I want to learn in the real world that I lean non-fiction. I have an unending thirst for knowledge and there’s much I have to learn across a broad range of topics.

I’ve published several books over the years; I was early to the game — but over time, and more frequently, I find several of my peers have been publishing books as well. I share books I’ve read recently from two of them in this issue. Beyond reading, I find myself drawn to taking courses on an active and ongoing basis — whether within my primary career domain as a strategic trusted advisor, in terms of courses I’ve taken as I’ve moved into joining boards, and most recently in the AI realm.

Learning new things keeps your memory and focus sharp, and picking up more knowledge and new skills and insights helps keep you valuable to employers and clients as being at the cutting-edge of yoru profession. You also become a more effective problem solver as you train your brain with diverse topics that help to invoke creative ideas. Curiosity that results in taking on new challenges helps you steer clear of boredom and makes you a more capable and interesting person who can converse on a broad range of topics with anyone, which is invaluable.

What’s your take? Are you a lifelong learner like me? What do you do to sharpen the saw for yourself?

To your success,

Kelli

Video Is AI’s Last Unstructured Frontier: Why the Next Infrastructure Battle Has Already Begun

We’ve spent the past 3 ½ years talking about AI models. I believe the next conversation will be about AI infrastructure.

After decades operating at the intersection of Silicon Valley and Hollywood, I’ve learned that the biggest technology shifts aren’t always driven by the most visible applications—they’re often enabled by the foundational layers operating quietly beneath them.

Today, I believe video has become AI’s last unstructured frontier. As AI agents become more capable, hyperscalers invest hundreds of billions in data centers, and enterprises demand personalized, trustworthy media experiences at global scale, a new question emerges: How do we make video itself programmable?

In my latest article, I explore why programmable video may become one of the most important infrastructure opportunities of the AI era, why data-center economics will increasingly matter, and why the next competitive advantage may not come from generating more video—but from making the world’s existing video infinitely more intelligent. Using ION Video as a case study, I examine why a technology that may have been years ahead of its time could now be arriving at precisely the right moment.

Leadership Resonance: A Powerful Leadership Skill That Virtually Nobody Talks About

Have you ever walked into a meeting and immediately sensed the energy in the room—before anyone had said a word?

That’s not just intuition. It’s a reminder that leadership is about far more than strategy, communication, or authority. Every leader creates an invisible ripple effect through their presence, behaviors, and emotional state.

In this article, I introduce a concept I call Leadership Resonance—the idea that the most influential leaders don’t simply direct organizations; they shape how people think, collaborate, innovate, and perform by the example they consistently set with their communications, their presence, and their behavior.

Drawing on insights from neuroscience, behavioral psychology, and real-world leadership examples, I explore why the most enduring influence isn’t what leaders say—it’s what others learn simply by watching them and observing coherence.

As AI transforms the future of work, our uniquely human capacity to inspire trust, curiosity, resilience, and courage may become the greatest competitive advantage of all.

Earth, Wind & Fire (documentary by Questlove)

For those of you who grew up with this band, this documentary will shed some light on things about this band that are likely to surprise you. Yes, the music is timeless and the talent is undeniable. Arguably, Maurice White was a visionary innovator and a genius. What he did in creating EWF was unique and he did it on a grand scale. However, I’m betting few readers (and fans) would know that the band racked up over $500k in debt after most of their tours — or that the band members were paid a dismal wage that made it difficult for them to get by. How could this work over time with 10 or more members in the band, with extravagant costumes, staging and lights. Very few bands of that size have ever been able to make it work financially, let alone over decades (sustainably). There’s a lot more to learn beyond the economics; for those who love the band and their music it’s worth a watch.

Song Sung Blue

This was an interesting film; at its surface, it looks like a film about a Neil Diamond tribute artist. But it’s really a love story about a couple who come together around a shared dream — to create a Neil Diamond “interpretive experience”, and manage to make it work against all odds. It stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, both of whom turn in powerful performances; I found myself falling into the story and liking it more than I thought I would. Though truth be told, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film that Focus Features has put out that I didn’t enjoy.

When We Are Seen: How to Come Into Your Power and Empower Others Along the Way
by Denise Young

This book’s author is an Apple alum; she rose through the ranks to become Apple’s chief of HR, the first VP of Inclusion & Diversity, and helped to build and shape the Apple Stores experience from the earliest days. Denise is also a black female leader — a rarity not just at Apple, but across the tech world, then and now. The book is a powerful story of her personal journey in tandem with the insights she gleaned along the line about being overlooked and marginalized as a minority leader. It’s a must-read not only for all tech leaders, but for progressive, growth-minded leaders across all business sectors. We’re well into the 21st century and need to start acting like it.

Digital Self-Defense in an AI World: How to Protect Yourself Online
by Jocelyn King

Written by a friend and colleague of mine, Jocelyn King (aka “The Queen of Online Safety”) shares her experience and knowledge of cybersecurity that we would all do well to learn more about in modern times when our personal safety has never been more at risk. The book provides a step-by-step action plan for what you need to do to protect yourself, your family, and your valuable data from the identity theft attacks that have grown increasingly rampant and show no signs of slowing down or going away. Consider this book an insurance policy to make yourself less vulnerable to what might otherwise appear to be random attacks that could create real havoc for you.

Leadership Resonance: A Powerful Leadership Skill That Virtually Nobody Talks About

LinkedIn.com, July 2026-After spending decades advising founders, CEOs, innovators, artists, and global leaders, I’ve become convinced that one of the most powerful forces in leadership is also one of the most overlooked and the least discussed.

Every leader creates an invisible field of impact around them.

Some leaders expand the intelligence, confidence, creativity, and courage of everyone they encounter.

Others—often with the very best intentions—unknowingly diminish those same qualities.

Video Is AI’s Last Unstructured Frontier: Why the Next Infrastructure Battle Has Already Begun

LinkedIn.com, July 2026- One lesson I’ve learned throughout my career bridging Silicon Valley and Hollywood is that history rarely rewards the company that arrives first.

It rewards the company that arrives when the market is finally ready. And that can take time – sometimes year, sometimes decades.

When I helped launch Apple’s early digital music initiatives, many believed the industry wasn’t prepared. They were right—until (some 15 years later) suddenly they weren’t. The convergence of technology, infrastructure, consumer behavior and business models had caught up, and subsequently transformed what once seemed premature into one of the defining platform shifts of a generation.

The Hidden Cost of Compartmentalization: When Your Greatest Strength Becomes Your Greatest Limitation

LinkedIn.com, June 2026-Many of the most successful people I’ve worked with share a common trait:

They’re masters of compartmentalization. They can walk out of a difficult conversation with a family member and into a board meeting without missing a beat. They can absorb setbacks, disappointments, and uncertainty while continuing to lead, create, perform, and execute at the highest levels.

In many cases, this ability has helped to create their success. But what happens when the skill that got you here starts preventing you from getting where you’re meant to go next? And what happens when it interferes with your relationships?

Is an Apple Smart Ring the Next Big Thing?

LinkedIn.com, June 2026-Every few years, Apple faces a version of the same question: what’s the next form factor? The iPod gave way to the iPhone. The iPhone gave rise to the Watch. And now, as the wearables category matures and health becomes the company’s most visible long-term bet, a new question is surfacing in product circles and on enthusiast forums alike — could a smart ring be Apple’s next meaningful hardware move?

Having spent years inside Apple’s product culture, and many more since then tracking where consumer technology is headed, I find this question more interesting than most “what will Apple do next” speculation. That’s because it isn’t really about a new gadget. It’s about a strategic fork in the road: does Apple expand its health platform by adding a new form factor, by deepening the one it already owns, or by doing both at once?

The Artist, the Symbol, and the Digital Revolution: What Working with Prince Taught Me About Artist Sovereignty

LinkedIn.com, May 2026 Ten years after his passing, I find myself thinking about what made Prince not just a genius, but a true visionary innovator.

The Symbol Was Never About Eccentricity

To understand Prince’s thinking in the years I worked with him, you have to understand why he became “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince” in the first place.

In 1993, Prince changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol — a combination of the male and female signs, merged into something entirely his own. The mainstream press treated it as the act of an eccentric megastar gone too far. But it was nothing of the sort. It was a deliberate, radical act of protest.

Honoring Greatness in Exceptional Individuals

I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by scores of exceptional individuals throughout my life and work. Whether they’ve been tech innovators, musical geniuses, icons in the creative world, published authors and journalists, or activists, one thing they’ve all shared in common is that they have lived their lives to the absolute limits. And they’ve shared their visions, gifts and talents with us in ways that leave us inspired, moved and forever changed. These individuals have carved their own paths, in many cases blazing trails through uncharted territory, and through their authenticity, drive and passion have created some extraordinary outcomes that will continue to inspire us long after they’re gone. These people have each made an indelible difference, and they’ve inspired us to follow our own individual compasses to make our own unique dent in the universe. Thank you for yours!

From Beyond the Grave: How Technology is Resurrecting Talent from the Great Beyond

Tupac rapped at Coachella in 2012. John Lennon released a Beatles song in 2023. Val Kilmer spoke in Top Gun: Maverick without being able to speak. This isn’t science fiction — it’s what’s happening right now, and the implications for every creative industry are profound.

In this article, I share insights into how AI, machine learning, and digital production are literally resurrecting some of the world’s greatest talent — and what the business, legal, and ethical implications are for the creative world. What makes this more than a technology story is the question underneath it: When a voice, a face, and a performance can be reconstructed — what is the irreplaceable thing?

When Past Glory Becomes Present Pressure: The Quiet Self-Sabotage of High Achievers

the darker side of past sucess

Ever been in a room where your old accomplishments seem to cast a longer shadow than your current reality? I’ve seen it up close on countless occasions — and have even experienced flashes of it myself at times over the years.

There’s a struggle many high achievers don’t talk about: what happens when your identity is still anchored in past success… but your present moment is asking something different of you. When you may have concerns that your best times are in the rear view mirror, and you’re left wondering whether you still have value.

It’s subtle. It’s human. And left unexamined, it can quietly lead to acts of unconscious self-sabotage in the very rooms that matter most. I wrote this piece to name it—and to hopefully offer a more powerful way through.

One Million Truths (movement)

My friend Mark Eckhardt is a truly amazing individual. We met courtesy of the Unreasonable group we’re both members of. Mark’s work encompasses narrative intelligence and conflict resolution in creative, heart-based ways that support and facilitate high-stakes decision-making through thoughtful, compassionate means. He does this for corporations wearing his various hats. And he also does this through a movement he founded in 2020 called One Million Truths (OMT). OMT documents the experiences of Black Americans who have dealt with social injustice and racism through their stories and personal narratives. Stories are collected and shared to educate, create allies and combat system racism, while at the same time leveraging AI and research to help modern leaders understand the changes in cultural narrative, to mitigate conflict and foster more collaboration. I’m really inspired and moved both by who Mark is as an individual, and by all of the great work he’s doing.

How to Raise Successful People: Simple Lessons for Radical Results by Esther Wojcicki

My friend Esther Wojcicki is a force of nature in her mid-80s. A former journalist and long-time educator in Silicon Valley, she’s inspired countless students who are now at the top of their game as tech execs, actors, and leaders. She’s also the mother of three amazing women (one of whom, Susan, was the CEO of YouTube before her untimely passing; another Anne, who is founder & CEO of 23andMe; and the third, Janet, who is an anthropologist and successful epidemiologist practicing in San Francisco). Esther published a very successful book in 2019, entitled “How to Raise Successful People: Simple Lessons for Radical Results”, which has become a global bestseller translated into over 30 languages.

Last week, I attended the premiere of a new documentary about Esther, entitled “The Godmother of Silicon Valley” which chronicles her amazing life’s journey and legacy. It was beautiful to experience Esther’s influential story while she got to see the the film in full for the first time. Janet & Anne were there along with several of her grandkids. This past week, we lost a legendary conductor in Michael Tilson Thomas at the age of 81. MTT, as his friends knew him, was an icon and a giant in the classical music world. He spent 25 years conducting the San Francisco Symphony, and I was fortunate to cross paths with him on several occasions over those years. Not only was he incredibly gifted and talented as a conductor and musician, he was also a genuinely grounded and kind man. In reviewing the many homages to him over the past few days, I came across a brief segment 60 Minutes did on him back in 2000 (with Morley Safer), which in less than 5 minutes pretty well sums up MTT and his amazing life. RIP maestro — you certainly left your dent in the universe and in the hearts and minds of those who knew you.

From Beyond the Grave: How Technology Is Resurrecting Talent from the Great Beyond

LinkedIn.com, April 25, 2026

In April 2012, 90,000 people at the Coachella music festival watched Tupac Shakur take the stage alongside Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The crowd went insane. The hashtag #tupachologram trended for three weeks. There was just one problem: Tupac had been dead for sixteen years.

What happened that night in the California desert was a signal flare — a glimpse of a future where talent, creativity, and legacy no longer end with death. Over the decade plus since then, the technology has only accelerated. Today, we are firmly in an era where the barrier between the living and the departed is being dissolved by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital production techniques that would have seemed miraculous (if not impossible) just a generation ago.

The Cupertino Connection: iTunes 11 and iCloud

iTunes may be one of the best products that Apple ever developed, or at the very least, one of the smartest. Just a few weeks ago Apple released iTunes 11 with a myriad of visual and technical changes and improvements. iTunes will turn 12 years old in January, and in those years Apple has found a way to streamline, connect, condense, and centralize a user’s content and multimedia experience. With that in mind, I think it’s worth looking at a few of the existing features, the new ones in iTunes 11, and the future ones planned for next year to see just how they’ll continue to do that.

First let’s look at how Apple already connects users and their content across multiple devices. One of the earliest features that did this was the “Library Sharing” feature that enables users to share their library across 5 devices connected to the same network using the same Apple ID. This was great because a user could have a whole collection on their desktop computer and access that same collection on their laptop. With this feature, users can also share content with other people on their WiFi network.

A similar feature that’s been out for a few years is AirPlay. AirPlay allows users to stream media from one device across multiple devices on their WiFi network. For example, a user can start listening to an album or playlist in one room and stream it to their home stereo in their living room. Users can even adjust which devices are playing at what time and the volume of those individual devices. Apple TV even lets users stream a movie from their computer on their Apple TV. Of course, all of these devices are controllable with an iPhone, iPod, or iPad.

Finally, with iTunes 11 and the updated iTunes store, all of a user’s downloads are automatically synced to the iCloud and accessible by any other iCloud capable device. This means a song downloaded in the iTunes store on your computer will be available on your iPod or iPhone. A similar service, iTunes Match, was released last year and allows users to pay an annual fee to have any of their music in their library uploaded to the iCloud, whether it was purchased or available in the iTunes store or not. These services could prove to be interesting competitors for Spotify, Rhapsody, Amazon, and other streaming/cloud based music delivery services.

Lastly, Apple recently announced that it will launch its own streaming radio service to compete with Pandora in the first few months of 2013. Like the aforementioned services, it will be available across iPhones, iPods, iPads, Macs, and PC’s as part of iTunes.

With all of these developments that have made Apple products so seamlessly integrated into a person’s life, it seems Tim Cook is moving forward to fulfill Steve Jobs’ goal of having an Apple device in every home. Cloud storage and online streaming is all the rage right now, and Apple’s solutions could prove to be big problems for its competitors. With so many solutions to a user’s content needs, why would they bother going elsewhere?

Cyber Monday – Digging for Digital Dollars

The holiday season is upon us now that Thanksgiving has come and gone. If you’ve just surfaced from the post-Thanksgiving turkey overdose then you’ve already missed Black Friday, which is probably for the better. However, many e-commerce sites are extending Cyber Monday deals through the entire week. This blog isn’t going to tell you where to find the best deals or give you any general tips, but rather it will highlight the importance of Cyber Monday to the tech industry and its influence throughout the globe.

The term “Cyber Monday,” was first coined in 2005 by Shop.com as a parallel to Black Friday. Scott Silverman of Shop.com created the concept based on research that the Monday following Thanksgiving was the biggest online retail day of the year, presumably for anyone who missed out on Black Friday deals. In its first year, Cyber Monday generated over $600 million dollars in sales from U.S consumers. It has since grown to double that and is now “celebrated” in countries across the globe such as the U.K, Portugal, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia.

One of the reasons Cyber Monday has grown so steadily over the years is because the rapid advancements in tech. In 2005, few people were browsing Amazon.com on their cell phones, now however, more than 12% of Cyber Monday purchases are made from a mobile device. Similarly, the rate at which technology is released has sped up in every direction, meaning more cool new gadgets for people to buy. As online sales soar with Cyber Monday, some brick-and-mortar locations and small businesses have complained that the deals online are taking money away from local economies. The sad (and great) news is that really, as technology and e-commerce rapidly evolve, everyone along the retail trail will have to find a way to keep up.

So happy hunting! There are so many cool new products on the market – from the iPad Mini to the Kindle Fire to all the great new laptops that have come out. Hopefully you won’t go overboard and max out all your cards, though I know it can be tempting!

A Message of Thanks and Giving

Greetings everyone, With Thanksgiving almost here, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday, abundant with loved ones. One of the many things I’m grateful for is your definitely your friendship this past year. 2012 has been amazing and successful for me, and that definitely doesn’t happen in a vacuum. I continue to work on new and exciting things to foster that same success and abundance in your own companies and projects.

  • I am launching a new coaching program to help companies and brands adopt best practices and implement them into their goals and initiatives. If you’ve read my latest book, “The Magic and Moxie of Apple: An Insider’s View” then you’ll be familiar with some of these best practices (but not all of them). If you have struggled to hit your goals, successfully launch your projects, or create the relationships you need to truly move forward, this is the program for you.
  • A new, updated edition of my bestselling book “Taking the Crowd to the Cloud,” comes out on 12/12/12.  This eBook will feature new chapters on Pinterest, the new Myspace, and on funding sources for musicians (and any of us with a great project that the “crowd” could get behind. In addition to the new chapters, I will be updating all of the book’s topics to account for updates and renovations on the various social networks, such as promoted posts on Facebook – and the ability to share video on Linkedin.  While this book does cover some very advanced capabilities, I always endeavor to approach each space with a beginners eye, for those of us who need that point of view as well.

Best wishes, Kelli Richards

Crowd Funding for Musicians

One of the things that I do when I work with clients is help them find new revenue streams and funding sources. They’re two of the most important aspects when it comes to business growth and development. It’s not any different for musicians. If you want to take music from a hobby to a full-time job, you’re going to need funding to survive and support your music. One of the great ways to do this is through online crowd funding platforms.

Crowd funding is essentially like having a fundraiser but it can be utilized to raise money for new companies and projects. There are literally dozens of companies out there, each with their own pro’s and con’s, that help raise money through crowd funding. Some of the bigger ones are: IndieGoGo, Kickstarter, and RocketHub. There are even crowd funding companies that focus exclusively on music such as ArtistShare, Sellaband, and PledgeMusic. One of the best and earliest examples of crowd funding is the rock band Marillion, who raised $60,000 for a U.S tour in 1997 and has since used it to fund the recording and marketing of 3 albums.

The over-arching premise is simple: fans donate what they can with different levels of donations that get different gifts. For example, a $10 donation will get a free copy of the CD they’re funding, a $25 donation gets a CD and a shirt, and a $50 dollar donation gets a CD, shirt, and personally autographed poster. Don’t sell yourself short, even in today’s economy people are willing to shell out the few extra bucks to help local music and get something cool in return. Who knows, those signed posters could be worth big money some day because they helped fund the album that made you famous!

Crowd funding is so much more than a simple fundraiser, it’s a really fantastic way to engage your fans. Many platforms allow, or even require, artists to post updates, pictures, videos, etc as a way of maintaining momentum during their campaign.

Will crowd funding replace traditional funding sources and revenue streams? Probably not; but they are a great way to get those precious few extra dollars that you need to record, produce, distribute, tour, film, etc. With crowd funding, you no longer need a major label budget to put out a great record. Simply ask your fans for help and everyone wins.

New York, We’ve Got Your Back

Let me preface this piece by saying my thoughts and prayers go out to the millions of people in the northeast who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy over the last week. I hope that everyone can quickly and easily recover from this tragic event. The human spirit is, as always, amazing. We’ve seen many events that showcase the spirit of brotherhood – and even heroism – through the media. Thousands of miles away on the West coast, the updates pouring in from social media were a vital lifeline of information for many friends and relatives for those affected.  Two of my own team members are in New York, and I was grateful that even without electricity and internet, they both updated their Facebook and Twitter accounts to say they were okay.

The use of social media and new technology in these situations has proven to be even more crucial for spreading important emergency warnings and reports to millions of people without power, clinging to the last few bars of battery life on smartphones. Many political officials, organizations, and news networks took to social media sites as a means of disseminating important information to users that were or would be affected and possibly in danger. Throughout the week FEMA, the MTA, the NYC Mayor’s Office, and many other official twitter accounts reached over half a million Twitter followers, as they all collaborated and worked together to coordinate efforts of warnings, updates, and disaster relief.

The Mayor of Newark, NJ even tweeted to his community to come to his house, where he had power, food and a place to recharge (both electrically and spiritually).

While local and national news outlets certainly tried to keep up with the news as quickly as possible, often times the “average Joe” was able to provide more current and informative updates. Many users even took to social media to inform friends and family where to get gas, which has become a precious commodity due to shortages. Friends would comment on statuses with things like “Still gas left on BP on Flushing Ave, 2 hour wait so hurry” or “Just re-fueled our generator if anyone needs heat or food.” The outpouring of support and information from friends and neighbors has allowed us, as a society, to do what we do best – to connect and help one another, even complete strangers.

Social Media has taken the stage, front and center – and it has proven itself to be more than a hobby or an app.  It has turned into a vital tool that ties us together on every level – professionally, personally and from community to community.  We have even seen social take to the cloud – and the crowd – through crowd funding opportunities, like KickStarter and Indiegogo.  While many opportunities exist to support New York and New Jersey – one of my favorites, from a grassroots point of view is by a young woman, coincidentally also from San Francisco https://www.indiegogo.com/NewYorkIGotYourBack.   My team and I sent our donation this morning.

As with 911, know that we’re here for you New York and New Jersey.  We’ve got your back.

Until next time,

The New Myspace: All or Nothing

Ah Myspace, the website that brought social networking and social media into the homes of the masses. Once the king of the internet, valued at $12 billion and becoming the most visited website in the world, it has since been dethroned and fallen from grace. Or has it? It was recently purchased by Specific Media and Justin Timberlake in June 2011 for $35 million with hopes of breathing new life into the company. But will they be able to reclaim the throne in a much more crowded kingdom? The answer to that remains to be scene but based on the preview it looks like something worth getting excited about.

The obvious issue is that there are already enough, if not too many, social networks for the average user. Between Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Youtube, Google+ and the many others, the internet has become inundated with social media. Billed as a way to connect artists and fans, the MySpace team at Specific media has taken a smart approach by letting users integrate their Facebook and Twitter accounts rather than having to create a new one. With celebrities and artists already connecting with fans via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram perhaps integration and consolidating is something we need more of.

Seamless integration and creative design are two big things the new Myspace has going for it. Based on the preview video posted by Justin Timberlake, the website does look gorgeous and functional; 2 issues which plagued it in the past. Perhaps the biggest thing it has going for it is the music feature, which is something it actually always did exceptionally well.

Once a great way for big names and local bands alike to post songs, event info, pictures, etc, it will now let users create and share playlists, listen to whole albums, discover new music based on recommendations, and more. A cool feature for the artists is an analytics page which provides demographic breakdowns of their audiences by age, gender, region, etc. Myspace currently boasts one of the largest music catalogues on the internet, albeit from mostly unknown artists, at 42 million songs. If they can get some big artists and labels on board or even integrate with other services like Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, or Rhapsody then it could very well come back to life.

There’s still a lot that is up in the air for the new Myspace but if it can find a way to get over the hump, play nicely with the other social networks, and deliver great content then I think it will be a success. If it can’t create a pleasant, clutter-free, and unique experience for the user then it may be time to just let it die out.

A Lennon Legacy

I’d like to think that we all have heroes, that everyone out there, no matter how successful they are, takes the time to have someone to look up to and admire. John Lennon was always that hero to me.  He lived by his own rules and made a mark that only grows stronger over time.  A few years ago, I was lucky enough to meet his oldest son, Julian, and to share a deeply moving conversation about his dad and the work that he did – and to discuss the work that Julian has created through his charity, The White Feather Foundation.

The White Feather Foundation was started over 20 years ago and embraces environmental and humanitarian issues in conjunction with partners from all around the world, raising funds for a more sustainable, better world for every living being. White Feather has done everything from supporting artists to marching to end bullying to building an orphanage in Sri Lanka.  One project at a time, Julian’s Foundation builds better lives and stronger communities.  In 2008, he was honored by the Better World Environmental Award by Prince Albert of Monaco.

It’s not easy for artists today – the entire industry has changed and then changed gain.  While being fathered by a giant among men, Julian has never been one to stand on the shoulders of his dad, John.   He has carved his own careers as both a musician and a photographer. He has brilliantly built the one thing ALL of us should define and design every day – an inspiring legacy that changes and betters the world of others.

Julian’s latest album, Everything Changes, will be released worldwide early 2013.  In the meantime, we will all wait impatiently, and hopefully support his great work with White Feather.  To send a donation, go to https://WhiteFeatherFoundation.com

Politics 2.0: The 2012 US Presidential Election

Very rarely, if ever, do I talk about politics. It’s one of those taboo topics of conversation that’s best left unmentioned for the sake of your sanity and relationships. The internet however seems to disagree. Now more than ever, politics is being discussed very openly; whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, blogs, podcasts, etc. So why the shift? Where did it come from? What does it mean? Who’s driving it? These questions deserve a bit more investigation, so let’s take a quick look.

Technology has always been used to shape and advance movements of political, cultural, and social change. From Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press of the 1400’s to the #Kony2012 campaign earlier this year, people have used technology to communicate and spread ideas in an effort to shape their culture and society. While Gutenberg’s printing press is undoubtedly more revolutionary than Twitter, both have the same end goal: to communicate and share ideas. Similarly, the advent of television played a huge role in modern U.S politics on September 26, 1960, when the Kennedy – Nixon presidential debate became the first presidential debate to be televised. Many people have said that Kennedy won the election based on that debate alone, being noticeably more calm, charming, and charismatic than Nixon.

In today’s culture, the media landscape has already begun to shift. No longer are people tuning into the nightly news or watching the debates on television. Rather, they check the news on their smart phone or watch the debate streaming live on their tablets on the go – untethered. So while technology and the media have adapted to these changes, how has politics? And why is it important?

For starters, the internet is here to stay. No longer are computers and the internet just for younger generations and tech geeks. 85% of adults in the United States use the internet, that’s 297.5 million people of legal voting age. According to SocialBaker.com, there are 167,913,500 U.S Facebook users or 54.12% of our total population. As you can see, that’s a huge chunk of people that are communicating their thoughts and ideas with one another. Similarly, that’s a huge chunk of people that can be reached by your ideas. If you were a politician, think about how powerful it would be to reach 54% of your target population. Imagine if you could even reach half of that, how those people could influence an election.

The purpose of this blog isn’t to say whether or not using social media to promote a political campaign is worthwhile or not, I think that has already been decided. Instead, I’d like to get you to think about how social media influences politics in the U.S today.

Music and Your Brand: Five Ways to Tune Your Demographic In With the Right Band

Attention is a scarce resource—and that means it’s a costly one. In a world of hundreds of competing voices, art and music have become a powerful way to bring a brand back into the spotlight. The perfect example? The “marriage” of Alicia Keys and Blackberry. Blackberry didn’t just bring Keys in as a spokesperson, either; it made her its creative director. That wasn’t just some made-up title to give the “Girl on Fire” credibility; Keys has brought in some stellar ideas to create user (and fan) engagement. For her first act, Keys shot videos in every location of her tour, and she invited local fans and residents of those locales to send their own photos to include in the video clips. Photos chosen went on Alicia Keys’ on-stage video projection. Now that is a huge win around user experience—one of the fastest ways to turn engagement into ROI. Make It Relevant Right now, consumer brands are marketing more and more with music and entertainment. In fact, it’s become so important that some major brands have started their own record labels—including Red Bull, Scion, Mountain Dew, and Converse. Why? Music is a powerful way to create a cultural connection and engage with an audience while drawing your product even closer to your demographic’s lifestyle. Being hip, cool, relevant, and present as a brand is important, but the more important issue can be the cost to your image if you resist popular trends. (Just one example: Levi’s missed the hip-hop boom, and it cost the company $1 billion in sales—in one year.) Tuning in isn’t just a smart way to connect with your audience; it can be vital to your brand’s survival. The New ‘A&R’ Brands are becoming a trusted source for breaking hip underground artists to the mainstream media. The iTunes team at Apple (my alma mater) chose specific, obscure artists to create buzz around the launch of iTunes. That curating practice was really a form of Artist and Repertoire (or A&R), which used to be the domain of a record company. An “A&R” role—which I once did for EMI Music prior to launching the music vertical at Apple—was responsible for cultivating new talent for a label. Now, brands are performing that role themselves. By partnering with artists who fit your audience, you can create the perfect exposure for your brand to the right people. Here are a few ways to start: Find the right sound. If you don’t know which artists may make sense for your brand, hire people who do, or spend time online and on social media networks researching what your audience is listening to. Just ask and explore; they’ll tell you which artists you’ll want to pursue further. Target your age group. Brands vying for the attention of younger audiences—especially those 13-25—must be tuned into the entertainment world, especially when tie-ins between brands and bands are core to success. By partnering with exactly the right artistic act, you’ll net far more attention—and credibility—with your target audience. Get in touch. Many brands are approaching artists directly. If the artist is signed, the label may be involved, but it’s best to start with the artist’s manager (if an established band) or the artist directly (when a rising indie artist). Go where your audience is. Music festivals create the perfect audience for a brand. You’ll place yourself in front of thousands of viewers and kindle a shared passion with your artists’ fans. There are lots of music festivals catering to diverse audiences; find your niche. Unify and balance. Merging the needs of artists, brands, and fans can create powerful results. When an artist has a song that ties into the theme of a brand campaign, it resonates with the audience and is doubly powerful. Behind the Music There’s nothing quite like a smart, well-executed match between a brand and an artist. When Rihanna debuted her clothing line for River Island during London Fashion Week, she helped generate buzz and boost awareness in the United States around the UK-based clothing brand. When Panic at the Disco partnered with Honda Civic for the Honda Civic Tour in 2008, the group created an original, exclusive song for Honda’s Civic commercial. The band reached a much broader audience, which resulted in higher CD and ticket sales, and Honda was on the cutting edge with a new kind of branded content. Apple’s commercial for the launch of the MacBook Air featured a soundtrack from a little-known artist, Yael Naim. “New Song,” which was recorded in Naim’s Paris apartment, jumped up the charts and subsequently led to a wildly popular US tour—and critical success. Those are just a few examples; dozens of artistically interesting campaigns have benefited from the touch of a complementary musical act. That creative matchmaking is different every time, and it brings a new, fresh twist to a brand’s perception. The reason is simple: By its nature, music is both emotional and powerful. That’s why fans gather around their favorite artists, creating strong, tightly knit subcultures. Tuning into those communities can be the difference between becoming “white noise” and making a truly engaged connection—and that’s every advertising campaign’s goal. Kick-Finishing: The Next Big Thing in Promotion – from Linkedin Influencers

It’s no surprise that artists and entrepreneurs alike frequently turn to crowdfunding — it works.

Crowdfunding campaigns raised more than $60,000 every hour in March. That’s a huge network recognizing and supporting individual projects and careers.

But it’s not just the initiation stage of a project that can benefit from a crowdfunding network. By using crowdfunding to spread the word after you’ve completed your project, you can turn your fans and partners into a massive marketing team and drastically increase the reach of your brand. This tactic is called kick-finishing, and it’s exactly what my musician friend Brent Bourgeois is doing with his new album.

Brent Bourgeois and the Origins of Kick-Finishing

Brent is a rock musician based in the San Francisco Bay Area with an extensive career in performing, songwriting, and producing. In the ’80s, he was a founding member of a fantastic band called Bourgeois Tagg and has since collaborated with numerous other talented artists.

Want to Take Your Project to the Next Level? Collaborate!

Although our culture tends to celebrate the idea of the “lone creative genius,” the truth is that a look behind the scenes of any success story will very often reveal the work of a stellar team; a group of passionate people who worked together to challenge and motivate one another. Steve Jobs famously promoted collaboration to increase productivity and creativity at Apple. It was one of the benchmarks of all the work that went on during my years there, and it continues to be a best practice of the corporation, and the alum that worked there.

The Who What Where When & Why of Startups

Essentially, startups form because a group of rebels are fueled to the brim by enthusiasm, innovation and passion about their ideas and products. Sadly, those assets are not enough though. Without the resources, infrastructure, and / or the knowledge to develop it on their own, it’s very likely to go supernova before it ever develops a comfortable orbit. Mentoring is a core part of running a successful startup.
