Star-Struck: Tapping into the Power of a Celebrity Speaker

How to Harness Power Like a Celebrity.

Three strategies of the stars that business professionals can use to make a difference in the world and do things that truly matter to them.

In the mid-1990s, Apple ran a series of insightful ads entitled “Power Is,” featuring several celebrities describing what power meant to them.

Spike Lee said power is succeeding when the odds are against you and you have a constant desire to learn. George Clinton, on the other hand, shared that power is the ability to motivate, communicate, and reinvent you. Marlee Matlin described power as having confidence, no limits, and the freedom of expression.

Simply by their celebrity status, all these people have a certain amount of power–a power to live how they want, influence others’ perspectives, and motivate people to take action. Of course, this power has its downside. How would you like your every move publicly dissected? But if celebrities treat that reality with respect and use it to uplift, inspire, and encourage others, then they can make a real difference–as well as a profit from their brand and their reach.

The question is: How do everyday people–specifically entrepreneurs–obtain this power?

While there is such a thing as “overnight success,” most celebrities work hard over a long period of time to reach their powerful status. Here are three strategies of the stars that business professionals can use to make a difference in the world and do things that truly matter to them:

1. Build Your Tribe

Who you align yourself with affects your values, reputation, success, and often your financial well-being. Most success stories involve individuals surrounded by people they trust who share their values and genuinely have their best interests at heart.

Take Oprah Winfrey, for example. She has had consistent support from incredibly loyal staff, close friends, and colleagues who have stood by her for decades. Personally, she’s benefitted tremendously from the mentor relationship she enjoyed with the late Dr. Maya Angelou, as well as from her long-time partner, Stedman Graham, and her best friend, Gayle King.

Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre’s business partnership with Beats is another great example of a professional relationship that was mutually beneficial. Beats proved to be highly profitable for both of them in its recent sale to Apple–something that may have been more challenging to do if not for the power of their partnership.

2. Pursue New Ventures

If you’ve had success as an entrepreneur once, you already know how to make something from nothing. Now, you have the ability to take your experience, resources, and prominence to create new businesses that fulfill a lifelong dream or generate revenue streams for a cause–or both.

Actor Paul Newman founded Newman’s Own in 1982 with pal A.E. Hotchner after his homemade salad dressing became a hit with friends. The company’s offerings have expanded, but always with the purpose of donating all proceeds to charities. To date, the amount contributed has surpassed $300 million.

Among other entrepreneurial endeavors, Sandra Bullock opened the eco-friendly Austin, Tex.-based Bess Bistro. She must love this pursuit because she was involved in every detail of making it come together.

3. Explore Other Interests

If you look at most celebrities’ resumes, you’ll notice a large number of multihyphenates–people with multiple job titles. It’s rare to truly excel in a number of areas, but many talented people who work hard can do it. Don’t feel like you have to stay in one industry or skill set. Branching out can often create multiple sources of income and fulfillment.

Take Beyoncé Knowles, for example. She doesn’t stop with music–she’s built a business empire endorsing companies like H&M, creating a line of fragrances, and heading up a successful clothing company. It’s no wonder she topped the Forbes Celebrity 100 list.

You should also use a variety of tactics to engage with your audience via social networking. It’s what Hillary Clinton calls “smart power” (i.e., finding ways to connect with people so they can then influence their governments). While Clinton’s celebrity status often distracts from her work, she’s excellent at using her power to engage and empower youth, women, and entrepreneurs as she works toward change.

You may not be a “celebrity” to the general public, but if you’re successful in your field, there are likely a number of people who know who you are. As your recognition grows, the number of people you influence will increase. In all of these cases, the celebs referenced have used their power and influence to make a difference in a way that allows them to invest their heart, soul, energy, passion, time, and even money into something they love. That’s real power.

What will you do with your power?

Star-Struck: Tapping into the Power of a Celebrity Speaker

ID-100261899Creating a well-designed event is a balancing act. Tapping industry leaders and controversial renegades, orchestrating brilliant panels, and throwing awesome after-parties all help draw people in, but a well-informed celebrity speaker can elevate your event to “can’t-miss” status with real punch and energy.

A well-chosen, well-prepared celebrity speaker can infuse your event’s atmosphere with a sense of excitement. And a celebrity who’s informed, articulate, inspiring, and entertaining guarantees an unforgettable impression.

Choosing the Right Fit

Looking to engage a celebrity for your event? Rule one: don’t get star-struck.

Just because you can score a celebrity speaker — or you’re a big fan personally — doesn’t mean that person is right for your event. In fact, you should consider celebrity speakers exactly the way you’d consider any other kind of speaker: Do their presence, skill set, and expertise fit? And, more importantly, are they relevant to your audience?

By hiring someone who’s the wrong fit, you’re courting disaster. Accidentally offensive jokes, mismatched humor, or a lack of industry knowledge could easily backfire. There’s also simply the awkwardness of a brand clash. You wouldn’t hire Kid Rock to speak at a Lexus engagement, right?

Poor celebrity partnerships can also damage both your company’s and the speaker’s reputation. Paula Deen spoke on behalf of the diabetes medication Victoza, even though she was still cooking incredibly high-fat foods on her television show. The media went haywire with a barrage of negative press aimed at both parties.

Before hiring a speaker, check out your celebrity’s reputation, experience, and expertise — and trust your own instincts. Do your homework. Does it feel right? Find a fit that’s authentic, seamless, and comfortable for both the speaker and your audience.

How Much Is Too Much to Pay?

Beyond finding the perfect fit, there’s another facet to consider when hiring a celebrity speaker: Star power comes with a price. A celebrity’s speaking fee is based on popularity and demand, and those rates can range from four to seven figures, depending on the celebrity and what he or she is being asked to do (e.g., speaking versus performing).

You shouldn’t sacrifice the quality of your event to book a single A-list act. So what is a reasonable amount of money to drop on speaking fees? It depends on your budget, your audience, and your brand.

Apple’s iTunes Festival featured big names like Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and Elton John. How did Apple justify 30 days of A-list entertainers when they gave away the event tickets for free? Twenty million people registered to attend the live stream, which meant Apple had the opportunity to get its brand in front of a crowd roughly the size of Beijing. That’s the kind of exposure money can’t buy.

Creating a Lasting Impression

Often, this decision boils down to one simple question: Is it worth it? You have to keep in mind the goals of your event, understand your audience’s needs, and recognize what will truly “wow” them. You might not get a hard-and-fast financial return to cover this investment, but you’re paying to create a powerful and memorable experience, and that’s hard to quantify.

Good celebrity speakers inspire action, instill confidence, and invigorate your audience. And, most importantly, they help shape events that attendees will remember. With the right celebrity partnership, you’ll create an impression that lasts for years to come.

Creating a memorable experience pays off for you, your event, your product, and your celebrity speaker. By identifying a great-fitting match and paying an amount that will still pay you dividends, your company can host an event that becomes “can’t-miss” — and is talked about for years to come. That’s the kind of ROI you can’t pay for.

Personal Glimpses of a Comet: Comic Genius Robin Williams

Screen Shot 2014-08-23 at 4.05.07 PMSometimes there are people who touch our lives in brief glimpses – and those encounters are so magical that we hold onto them and look forward to the next one over and over.  They’re friends of friends or colleagues we bump into at events or meetings or random connections where it seems serendipity is at work.

Robin Williams was one of those people for me. I was the talent producer of the BAMMIES (Awards) in San Francisco for nearly 20 years, and was fortunate to have the chance to work with Robin as a presenter a couple of times during my tenure.  Each time without fail, as tensions ran high in production (which they do at live events, no matter how well prepared you are), Robin would be there, working his magic backstage, making everyone laugh and lightening things up for us – as well as for the other presenters and performers.

And our paths would cross that way for many years through different circumstances.  When he was shooting, “What Dreams May Come,” I’d hear regular stories of his antics from my good friends Michael Van Himbergen and Jeff Diamond, who were part of the visual effects team. (The film won numerous awards for visual effects by the way, including an Oscar.)

And the connections continued.  As recently as last year, I was approached by Robin’s team to lend my “super-connector” expertise to help source potential buyers for his home in Napa from within my network.  Unfortunately we weren’t successful, but the home is a real stunner.

There have been other modest and even indirect glimpses of Robin too – someone recently showed me where Thomas Kincaid, the artist, had painted Robin into a corner of one of his San Francisco paintings; something few would notice or realize was him if no one pointed it out.  He was everywhere it seems.  But again, these are only flashes… the off-stage Robin was probably known only to a handful of very close friends, to his children… for the rest of us, it’s like how a comet flies past us through space.  Like Robin’s work, a fast-moving comet leaves trails everywhere in its wake, timeless.  Nothing really ever fades away completely, does it?

The point I’m making here, ultimately, is to pay attention.  To be sure that we stop and notice the people who whiz past us with comet-like brilliance.  To recognize how much they mean to us, even in brief glimpses.  And to BE that comet whenever we have that opportunity.  In the immortal words of Robin, “You’re only given one little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”

Here’s to Robin … and the rest of his magical journey.

My Tribute published on LinkedIn

Robin Williams

I’ll never forget the first time I met Robin Williams. I was a teenager attending a taping of “Mork & Mindy” on the Paramount Pictures lot. He was incredibly gracious and encouraging to my 16-year-old self with aspirations of working in the entertainment business and making my dent in the universe.

Many years later, I crossed paths with him again when I was driving entertainment initiatives at Apple. He accepted our invitation to participate in a few marketing campaigns, and he even performed for our employees. He was always a delight to work with — no exceptions.

In 2003, Williams supported a fundraiser I helped organize. Through the Chairs That Care initiative, we asked celebrities to design a dining room chair that would be raffled off to support the Habitot Children’s Museum. Appropriately, Williams and his kids designed a chair entitled “Peace.”……….

And if we’re lucky, we will inspire and change the lives of those we reach, or at least make their days a little brighter along the way. I’m so grateful that we got to experience Williams’ magic and gifts; they touched many of us deeply. Honestly, it feels like losing a dear friend.

An Exclusive Interview with Stewart Copeland, Drummer from The Police

stewartI recently talked with my good friend, Stewart Copeland, a film composer, musician and the and the drummer for The Police on my Blog Talk Radio show, All Access Radio. Stewart has an extensive and diverse resume. We started the interview talking about what motivates him and what passions drive his choices. Steward said, “It has to be creatively amusing.”

We discussed his childhood, and living in Lebanon with a father who was unknowingly working for the CIA. His cultural environment in the Middle East very much influenced his music as a creator. He explained that the “cultural environment was Arabic music, which has that dropkick beat, which is very similar to the rhythm trick of reggae which has that dropkick beat; the absence of one an emphasis of three of the bar.”

stewart_copelandCopeland described how his passion for drums began and shared with me hisfavorite memory with The Police. “Favorite experience, probably Shea Stadium. We probably all agree that out best, ultimate gig where we reached the pinnacle, -Sting likes to say ‘the only place we could go from now is down’ –and soon after that we broke up, but that was a really great gig, a really great evening, a wonderful experience and a pinnacle of everything that we had struggled to achieve.

Warp-Speed: A Promising Future for Spacecraft or a Trekkie’s Daydream?

Hollywood films have championed the image of spacecrafts moving at unimaginable speeds, traveling seemingly faster than the speed of light. Whether referred to as “warp speed,” “super drive,” or “time travel,” movies from Star Wars to Star Trek to the satirical Space Balls, have all taken advantage of an apparently unrealistic form of transportation. But what if this incredibly efficient yet fictional type of travel was more practical than we ever imagined? What if “warp speed” was no longer in the realm of science fiction, but a mainstream, sensible mode of transportation?

Now before I go on, I feel obligated to inform you that the research, and necessary technology needed for such manipulation of space and time is in an extremely rudimentary form; that being said, recent breakthroughs in the logistics, calculations and theoretical plausibility of such transportation devices have reawakened the dreams of NASA scientists, and science-fiction geeks alike.  Who doesn’t get excited by the idea of traveling through space?

Physicist, Miguel Alcubierre, first formulated this notion of traveling near the speed of light in his 1994 paper, “The Warp Drive: Hyper-Fast Travel within General Relativity,” suggesting a manipulation of the time and space surrounding the vessel, rather than actual acceleration. Such manipulation of the space in front and behind the “space ship,” would focus on an expansion and contraction of space and time. (Think of space and time as one entity –the physical mass and structure of the universe surrounding the vessel.) Expanding the space behind the ship would cause a forward motion similar to the expanding and contracting of a rubber band. If you were to stretch out a rubber band, releasing one end you would send the band flying through the air. Such forward movement is caused by the elasticity of the rubber band, pulling it expands the rubber, which sends it forward- just as expanding the space behind a ship would, hypothetically, send it in a forward direction. This constant expansion and contraction, in front of and behind the ship, could allow for travel near the speed of light (as nothing itself can exceed the speed of light, according to Einstein.  However, space is able to contract at any speed, allowing for an equally impressive contraction.)

Now Alcubierre’s theory for travel at the speed of light hit a speed bump early in its life as it was determined that in order to manipulate time and space in such a drastic way, one would need massive amounts of energy- around the mass-energy of Jupiter or 317 planet Earths. The theory was deemed impractical and was since laid dormant.  However, recently, physicist Harold White has put this notion of faster than light warp drive back on the science fiction map. White, after making adjustments to the design of the craft and re-crunching numbers, has reduced the necessary mass needed for travel from a Jupiter sized planet to a common space craft, some 1,600 pounds (or the weight of Back to the Future’s 1981 DeLorean)- now that already seems way more plausible.

And while a functional warp drive space shift is still in the distant future, such advancements are extremely exciting and promising. Imagine traveling 4.3 light years in a matter of weeks, in order to visit other solar systems!

The Continued Convergence of Music & Tech: Laptop Orchestras

Remember lugging that giant trumpet case to and from school just so you could be a part of the school band? Half the time you forgot to bring it and the times you remembered, your arm was sore by the time you entered the school’s doors. Or maybe you just regret never having had the musical instrument experience at all. Well here is your opportunity to combine some of the skill sets you already possess to be part of an orchestra. But instead of the use of a traditional instrument, a laptop is all that is needed to become a part of a unique ensemble.

Schools are actually forming bands where student-manned laptop computers are the primary instruments. The most visible schools to be adapting to this modern orchestra are Stanford and Princeton. Students can take a seminar where the expectation is to make music with their laptop. Students are instructed to design their own software instrument, a “meta instrument,” using code.

To learn more about the technical process involved, watch the video below from the Stanford Laptop Orchestra:

My question is this: If laptop orchestras are the future of music classes, what effect will it have on traditional instrument learning and playing? Studies show that playing an instrument positively improves cognitive functions, enhances hand-eye coordination, sharpens concentration, and relieves stress.  Of course, there are huge opportunities there for underserved populations who may not have the financial resources to outfit all of their schools with instruments – but could, perhaps, afford or acquire one or two laptops to be shared…

In the end, however, it comes down to this: Can making synthesized sounds from computers really compensate for traditional instruments?  That is the question we have to ask.

Outside of bringing music and instruments into places that might not otherwise be able to participate, maybe the real question is: Should it?

Can Google Give Spotify the Smackdown?

App Icons Downloading into Smart PhoneGoogle has set its sights on releasing a music service to take on popular options such as Spotify, Pandora and Rhapsody. Their recently announced streaming music service — Google Play All Access — is poised to make quite a splash in the market.

What is It?

Google Play All Access has launched. In a hypebot.com interview with Paul Joyce, product manager of Google Play Music, said the approach is to play to Google’s strengths — the cloud infrastructure: cloud computing, streaming and storage. It draws upon the massive music library that Google has assembled and adds to individual users’ collections. The combined collections are uploaded to Google Play, which gives Google even more audio data to use for their service.

A few other standout features include “Listen Now,” which works similar to Pandora in picking out new songs that are inline with the listener’s music interests. It also deletes songs that you don’t want to and it’s both web-based and mobile-based, according to CNN.

Google’s ISP Takeover

This is hardly the first time Google has broken into an existing market in a big way. Google Fiber, the high-speed Internet and television service, has created a stir in the Internet service provider industry. In many areas of the country, ISPs had previously had virtual monopolies on services and weren’t exactly rushing to incorporate new technology.

A basic Internet package runs about $35 per month, notes cleartvbundle.com. But it doesn’t quite compare to where Google Fiber is going. ISPs and cable companies in the three cities that Google Fiber is rolling out in, Kansas City, Provo and Austin are scrambling to stay competitive considering Google offers a free Internet option as well at a price close to many ISPs standard plans.

Google Play All Access Versus Spotify

So the real question is, how well does Google Play All Access stand up against Spotify, which is one of the leaders in the streaming music market? Google made sure to have an application available for Android users, but it did not create one specifically for the iOS market. However, according to Wired, a third party developer is making it available through iOS with the gMusic app.

Spotify wins out in the pricing, since you don’t actually have to pay anything to use the basic service on computers. Google is $9.99 per month, which matches Spotify for mobile access. Spotify’s radio option falls short compared to Google’s, due to the fact that you can alter the Google Listen Now list to exclude songs you don’t want.

Google also looks better than Spotify with a clean UI. Features such as Drive based storage of 20,000 songs and MP3 incorporation into lists helps to consolidate music collections. Spotify wins out with its desktop client, as Google only has a browser based option.

It certainly can’t hurt to try both. Each offer a one month free trial.

Alice through the Looking Glass (The Corning Glass, that is…)

adaymadeofglassIn the near distant future, all of the surfaces in your house are made of high-tech glass. Instead of following a recipe on your tablet, your glass countertops now become the display. Does this make your spine tingle?  Does it feel uber-tech, light years away? Like something only Steve Jobs or Captain Kirk would have access to?  Nope, it’s coming to your doorstep.

Let’s paint a picture of an average Joe (or Joanne)’s day… It’s dinnertime. While trying to make the meal, the recipe on your tablet is too small to see and the stand you have propped it up on keeps falling over. Your hands are caked in food and the phone rings. Your son sits across the counter from you, nagging you about needing help with homework. Everyone and everything around you demands your attention. Imagine an innovation that could help you manage all of those tasks.

When the phone rings, your counter lights up and with one touch of your food-caked knuckle you’re talking to your great aunt Gladys (or the CEO of a major tech firm). Meanwhile, your kid is interacting through the countertop display with his tutor.

This near distant future could be possible with Corning’s technology. Corning’s is now researching ways to improve the glass, and apply it to all types of environments. Each glass display is powered by tablets encased in lightweight, durable glass, which –in this future time- are almost as commonplace as smartphones are today. Each tablet is tailored to its owner, organizing, managing and displaying everything in his or her life.

If we take this vision even further, now imagine the same technology that helped make dinnertime prep simpler, and apply it in hospitals, classrooms, cars and offices. The possibilities are limitless. If we step into a future hospital we will see wall-to-wall, touch-sensitive displays, capturing critical information for the current procedure taking place. The hospital rooms are covered with non-porous, easy to clean glass, making it an ideal product for sterile environments. Patient charts can be easily accessed from sleek, well-organized tablets.

Cars will also be equipped with glass displays. Now, music and essential driving information can be transported from a person’s individual tablet or smart phone, to the dashboard display. In addition to the dashboard, windows and a car’s sunroof will be made of automotive electrochromic glass, offering many possibilities.

Not only will classrooms have wall-to-wall displays, they will also be equipped with desk displays, and activity tables, making learning tangible and interactive. Imagine an office equipped with this same glass. Office meetings can now be interactive and plans can be changed right in front of you on large-scale displays.

Our future with glass is going to change the way we think, create, and organize our lives, and Corning’s is stepping up to the plate to make it happen. What do you think is possible with this futuristic technology? To see the glass in action, watch these three videos made by Corning. In A Day Made Of Glass 2: Unpacked, the narrator describes the technology used and explains what is possible today.

Dr. Judith Orloff, New York Times Best-Selling Author

Transforming the face of psychiatry, Judith Orloff MD asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal — and prevent — illness.Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care. Dr. Orloff is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Dean Ornish and Mehmet Oz have done for mainstream medicine — she is proving that the links between physical, emotional, and spiritual health can’t be ignored. Dr. Orloff is a New York Times bestselling author and is on the UCLA psychiatric clinical faculty. She specializes in treating empaths and sensitive people in her Los Angeles based private practice. She has spoken at medical schools, hospitals, the American Psychiatric Association, Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit, and alternative and traditional health forums — venues where she presents practical intuitive tools to doctors, patients, and everyday people. In response to her work, The Los Angeles Times calls Dr. Orloff “a prominent energy-based healer.” Dr. Orloff’s latest book “The Empath’s Survival Guide: Life Strategies for Sensitive People” (Sounds True, 2017) is an invaluable resource to help sensitive people of all kinds develop healthy coping mechanisms in our high-stimulus world without experiencing compassion fatigue or burnout. Then empaths can fully embody their gifts of intuition, creativity, and compassion. Listen to the entire podcast here: https://allaccessradio.libsyn.com/kelli-richards-interviews-dr-judith-orloff

How to Harness Power Like a Celebrity

While there is such a thing as “overnight success,” most celebrities work hard over a long period of time to reach their powerful status. Here are three strategies of the stars that business professionals can use to make a difference in the world and do things that truly matter to them:

The Super Connector’s Guide to Making Powerful Business Introductions

As an entrepreneur, you understand the importance of having a strong network. What many people don’t understand is that it’s not always who you know, but what you do with those connections, that matters. Throughout my career, my extensive network in Silicon Valley has allowed me to create intros for startups seeking funding for their ventures and secure celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld for corporate events. But I haven’t done this by connecting with a bunch of random people on LinkedIn; I’ve nurtured these relationships through the power of reciprocal networking. If you aren’t actively looking for ways to make valuable introductions for your connections, your network isn’t as strong as it could be. Here are a few ways to make winning introductions that will lead to lucrative long-term opportunities for you and your connections. How to Make a Powerful Business Introduction When you start making business introductions in person, it can feel a bit awkward. But the key to a successful connection is a clear understanding of what each individual has to gain from the relationship. If your connections don’t see an advantage to meeting the people you suggest, they’ll be skeptical of your intent. A proper business introduction immediately erases confusion among mixed groups of people. It sets the stage for respectful interactions and eases the otherwise uncomfortable first conversation. Always introduce the person with more authority first. Adding explanatory statements after saying each person’s name will also get the conversation flowing naturally and provide context. These can be simple statements such as their job titles. When introducing one person to a group, announce that person’s name and identifier, and introduce each group member in the order they’re sitting or standing. Connecting people who offer complementary services is a great way to promote mutually beneficial relationships. You can also offer to let people you respect sift through your LinkedIn connections and facilitate these meetings to add value. Tips for Navigating the Uncomfortable Email Introduction Making introductions in person usually feels less forced than sending emails out of the blue, but it’s not always feasible to get the two people you want to connect in the same place at the same time. This is where email introductions come in. When emailing your connections to establish an introduction, make sure you always: Ask for permission first. Explain the value proposition for each party meeting the other, and ask if they’d feel comfortable with you making the connection. Mention whether they’ve met before. People often forget brief meetings, and the reminder can save them some embarrassment. Make haste slowly. Good introductions require careful preparation. Think through how both parties could benefit from each other, and spell it out in an email. Hurried, ill-planned emails can have a negative impact on these burgeoning relationships–and your reputation. Encourage the conversation. You never want to start an email thread, only to receive no response from either party. To avoid this social disaster, urge both people in the email to arrange a time to talk in the near future. Make action steps clear. Be straightforward in your email, and outline what the specific next steps should be. Solid introductions always come down to adding value for other people. When you set up a long-term cycle of promoting mutual wins, you position yourself as a credible and trustworthy business connection. Establishing a reputation for facilitating great relationships is the best way to increase your chances of success, no matter what field you’re in. And as this cycle of reciprocity continues throughout your career, the referrals, invitations, and unique experiences will start pouring in.
